I've noticed that the travel agency say that they are taking you to
certain restautants to "avoid bad food". The food we've had has been
incredible. We've been eating from street vendors and cheap restaurants -
both of us eating plenty of food for less than 30 Yuan (2 pounds). The
restaurants are very clean, the staff never touch the food, they all wear
masks and gloves and are very conscious of hygiene - even the street
vendors. I know that there are touristy restaurants where meals are
hugely overpriced (say 500 Yuan for a meal - about 40 pounds). Basically,
you'll feel comfortable to eat anywhere in China. And you dont need to be
worried about language problems in resturants - even though almost no-one
speaks english - we have "We only eat vegetables" and "We are vegtarians"
written down in Chinese and we just show it to the waiters or food
servers and they understand. It's great.
