Sources from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in China, said
that starting from next year, more than half of world's population will
reside in urban areas. In the next 10 years, China will enter this trend.

The UNFPA recently published the "State of World Population 2007," in
Beijing, with a theme of "Unleashing the potential of urban growth." It
is said that China's urban population growth is due to the huge influx of
the rural population. China's urban population is growing at a rate of 18
million per year, with 61 percent of population growth resulting from
population migration. However, for most countries, future urban
population growth occurs naturally.

Between 2005 and 2030, China's urban population is expected to increase
from 560 million to 910 million, with the percentage rising from 42
percent to 64 percent of the total population. In 1980, this proportion
was at only 20 percent. The growth in the urban population will bring
about complex and continuous challenges in the areas of employment,
housing, education and medical insurance.
