me connect for anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes and then I have to re-login. Any idea what is

Anyone done this recently? Got to do it around 29th, & was wondering if there's anything on the
recent changes have resulted in any tightening up that hasn't yet made its way to the website

I'm specifically worried about whether I need originals of degree certs etc. Yesterday the
(braindead &/ irresponsible) administrator at the school said I did. So I frantically got
relatives to mail them from the UK. This afternoon she called me to say she looked at the website,
and I didn't. The site also makes no mention of them on the requirements page:

Foreign experts, scholars, teachers or managers to be working in Mainland China shall provide visa
notice form from an authorized department and the certificate or the confirmation letter for
foreign experts from the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of PRC;

Note: Foreigners employed in China for one year or longer is required to provide health
certificate.

But who knows whether that's up to date. & it's still an issue because the originals might not
reach me before the 29th... the same goes for the docs mentioned above of course

And with the enquiry line open a generous two hours a day to sort out those special cases.

There's some slight hope for me - the Chinese is phrased differently:

Which I'd translate as:

I can't apply for a visa from the country I'm currently in (China). So maybe I'm a special case.
Or maybe 规定就是规定.

I'll try calling them tomorrow. Might as well drop the visa agencies a line while I'm waiting too.

Incredibly, this is the reply I got from the Consulate:

This is somewhat hedged, so perhaps even the visa agents at Shoestring don't feel that they can

I'm on a student visa now, and the company I've been working for part-time is about to hire me as
a full-time employee. I've begun discussing the details of getting my work visa, and they just
told me I have to fly back to America (my home country) to get it. SH*T! They said all foreigners
have to go back to their home countries to get a work visa.

Well, that's not what the office in HK said. I don't quite believe it either, but if you can wait
till next Thursday I should be able to confirm it.

Yeah, I can wait. My student visa expires on August 20th. I was pushing the company a bit because
I didn't want my visa procedures to slip through the cracks, as has happened to me and other
people I've known. This company seems to be pretty up on things, though. Hopefully this is just a
classic case of miscommunication, and I don't need to spend $1,000 + USD to fly back home only to
change my visa type. Anxiously awaiting your response . . .

Tell me about it. Chinese administrators attitudes to what's "their responsibility" can be so
narrow the cracks can be huge.

The admin at the school that offered me a job told me I'd have to go to Hong Kong, but didn't
explain why or point me to the website. Then only 9 days before my visas due expire, she
misinformed me that I'd need my original degree certs. So I immediately got relatives to post them
over. When I complained she said this was "all my responsibility, not hers". But she never
bothered to tell me that. To which her answer was "you should have asked the other foreign
teachers".

When she finally looked at the HK commission website she discovered they weren't necessary - but
failed to point out the text that suggested I wouldn't be able to apply in HK. She also told me
getting the docs required from the foreign experts bureau "normally" takes 30 days. Since she'd
only applied 15 days before the expiry date she said she "couldn't guarantee" I'd get them before
going to HK. And was totally unwilling to make any back-up plans.

I went to the Deputy head of the Foreign Education Centre, then down to her boss. Fortunately he's
been abroad (Wales!) and could understand what I'm talking about....

Hello.

I use Chinese daily to do business. My computer has Win98SE (English version). I can use Chinese
(both Traditional and Simplified) in some programs: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Word, E-mail
program, etc. But I cannot use Chinese in other programs: Chat program, etc. I must be able to use
Chinese in all programs. I want to know how this can be done? I use Win98SE and I do not want to
use another Windows version.

Is there are particular reason why? Win98 wasn't really designed as a multi-lingual operating
system so it doesn't handle different languages well. Upgrading to XP would solve all your
problems.

If you really want to stick with Win98, perhaps something like NJStar Communicator will help.

better update to a different OS
if your box is too old to run XP or Ubuntu or any modern OS you can easily run puppy linux -its
fast and secure and easy. There's a Chinese version
or you can run the English Puppy, and enable East Asian support (like this)

I found that Singapore Mandarin is not that different from the mainland putonghua as Taiwan guoyu.
But still there is some very interesting usage, and I would like everyone to add more to my list.
1。 Using 喉 for 管 (pipe)。What is the origin of this? Maybe some dialect? The two-syllable
variant for "a pipe" would be 喉管 in Singapore. 水管，弯管 become 水喉，弯喉。
2。The measure instrument 卷尺 becomes 拉尺 in Singapore. Is there a similar usage somewhere
in the Mainland?
3. 洋灰，洋人 for 混凝土，老外 are not considered archaic and still used commonly in
Singapore.

Are all those variants fixed in Chinese dictionaries printed in Singapore?

Sorry but Singapore Mandarin is closer is Taiwan's in terms of speaking, both have little accent,
and I think Singapore Mandarin is even more "diluted". Vocab-wise, I'm not sure =p

Yes we use 洋灰 and 洋人, 老外 is used in media, and i've heard of 混凝土...anyway 洋灰
and 洋人 is 红毛灰 and 红毛人 in Hokkien respectively just for ur info.

We say 锁匙 and not 钥匙. 锁匙 is from Hokkien I think.

When we say something is hot, we use 烧 and not 烫. 烫 is more like scald. Again from Hokkien.

汤太烧，我的舌头被烫到。

And iron, as in for pressing clothes is 烫斗 and not 熨斗.

Yes, i meant vocabulary. For example there is often great difference between technical terms
(especially those of electronics) in Mainland and Taiwan. I don`t think it`s like that in
Singapore.

Hmmm I see, well in those instruction booklets i'm always puzzled as to why the Traditional and
Simplified Chinese versions always differ, haha, i was even thinking whether the Traditional
version sounds better in dialects like Cantonese as Hong Kong uses Traditional Chinese.

Remembered something more. When assembling the machine they always called different types of
screws something like 拉跑 (foundation screw)，拉扣 (rivet,clinch) etc. (not sure if I write
the proper characters). Maybe it was the mixture of Mandarin and Cantonese.
And about 喉。They used it in everyday informal speech.

I find spoken Singapore mandarin easier to understand then Taiwan or Mainland mandarin. Has anyone

Yes, I agree with you on that.

Put it simply, mainland and taiwanese mandarin seems to me way deeper to singapore on average. But
that's expected since Singapore uses english as it's working language. Furthermore mainland
/taiwan have plenty of slangs/expressions/chengyus thrown into 'normal' conversations on average
while being capable of swinging between simple chinese to complex chinese in an instant. Singapore
mandarin, while containing influences from other local languages doesn't usually get too complex
on average.

Whenever I feel down due to not being able to understand mainland/taiwan tv shows properly , I
switch to singapore shows. Instant relief. But seriously, no pain no gain.

I've got a somewhat Ah Q related question, which has been on my mind for some time. As I noted on
another thread:

Ah G doesn't work as well, because I understand that Q is supposed to be a double pun: it is a
homonym for "queue" and looks like a head with a queue coming off it (ie: the tail of the Q). At a
simpler level, I personally find the sight of the letter Q strewn liberally through a page of
Chinese characters very funny.

OK, so this was in pre-pinyin days and "quei" sounds more or less the same as "gui4". But is it
just my imagination, or does "quei" with the "qu" pronounced in the English way sound more like
"gui4" than any of gui1,2 or 3?

More generally, is meaningful "tonal spelling" possible? I suppose the classic example of tonal
spelling would be "Shaanxi". Further, I understand that there is a whole romanisation system
called Gwoyeu Romatzyh based on the principle that tones can be spelt (eg: guo1 = guo, guo2 = gwo,
guo3 = guoo, guo 4 = guoh).

If meaningful tonal spelling is possible, can it help in learning the tones?

Hello,
I am a brand new member to these forums. You all seem incredibly helpful, I just wish I could
provide just as much knowledge in return.

My request is for the translation of "playing card." My automated internet queries return "纸牌"
so I would like to know: a) if this is correct, and b) if someone would be kind enough to provide
a workable spelling using letters from the English alphabet.

I sincerely appreciate any insight you are able to share. Thank you very much.

I think the correct term is 撲克牌. If you have no knowledge of pinyin, then a close sound in
English would be something like "pooh kuh! pai?" Remember to pronounce the second sound like you
are mad, and the last sound as if you were asking a question.

the sound 撲克 is from "poker"

牌 means card

in this case,撲克and牌 must use together ,you can't only say 撲克

so in chinese,撲克牌=poker...

紙牌 includs all kinds of playing card

紙 means paper
牌 means card
i don't know to explain the pronunciation of 紙
because there isn't any alike sound in english

Thank you so much for the extra information, but now some doubts are starting to creep in (on my
part, not any of yours).

I fear as though I might have been too vague in my initial query. I am looking to say "Playing
Card" as an object; the pieces of cardboard that people play games with. I hope it didn't seem as
though I was asking about the act of playing cards; that is not what I was referring to.

So is ABCinChina's response still correct given this new information, or did robin0941 reveal a
more accurate translation?

You seem in need for the terms used in playing card:
Spade: "黑桃"
Heart: "红桃" or "红心"
Diamond: "方块儿" or "方片"
Club: "梅花" or "草花"
A: "A" (alphabet) or "尖儿" or even "Ace"
K: "K" (alphabet) or "凯" or "King"
Q: "Q" (alphabet) or "圈儿" or "Queen"
J: "J" (alphabet) or "勾" or "丁勾" or just "Jack"
Big (Color) Joker: "大王"or "大猫"
Small(Black) Joker: "小王"or "小猫"

Very informative list, monto, but I think he is really just looking for the one word to say
"playing card". In that case, Gus, the suggestion by ABCinChina is just fine, robin0941 was just
trying to add some more background information.

webpage tells me it's China while forigen webpage says America. So which is rig
ht ?

If we count only the non-disputed lands, China is the fourth-largest. If we also count disputed
lands with India or taiwan, China will be 9640821 or 9677009 km2 (third-largest). The old map of
Republic of China counts "Outer Mongolia" as their territory too. In this sense, the total area of
Republic of China was 20881946 km² , outplacing Russia as the largest country in the world.

This list shown China and America both sharing third and fourth spot. You'll get different answers
depending on who you ask.

Hell, I even had one Australian tell me Australia was the second largest country in the world. ;)

The United Nations recognises China as third largest. Only the CIA and websites which use their
figures put the US ahead.

It depends how you count. The CIA excludes water covered areas when discussing China, but includes
them in the US. In fact, over the last few years, they have kept increasing the size of the US's
land area, despite there being no material gains.

But then the UN probably include Taiwan in calculating China's size. Don't know what they do with
that area in India?
And very strange that the CIA would increase the US' land area. I thought their numbers were
usually quite reliable.

Last term I had fun asking my students this question when I taught a course on British and
American culture.

On the first slide I showed that the 50 states of America are larger than Mainland China,
excluding Hong Kong/Macau and Taiwan.

Of course the students were angry this exclusion, so the next slide showed the combined China
being larger than the 50 states.

Finally the last slide showed that America's additional territories, such as Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Island, pushing America ahead again.

I'm afraid I don't have the exact numbers anymore but anyway you look at it, it's only about
+-5000 square kilometers or about 0.1% of the total either way, so for all practical purposes it's
fair to say that America and China are the same size.

The point I was trying to make is that learning that China/America is the third largest country in
the world is useless knowledge, but knowing why Chinese and Americans might be arguing about such
a thing is invaluable.

But hey I'm British, what do I care either way?

I know that sometimes stores in NA has sell script from tv/movie.

I've never heard that in Chinese tv/movie drama.

Just curious, what do you need the scripts for?

.....Do you have the movie with you? may be pause the write down the script? ( =.= that's the only
method I can think of)

You mean the whole movie script, with all the dialog and everything else? I doubt they sell that.
But some websites might post it online. Just try to do a search. Besides, it's illegal to sell
scripts without the permission of those involved in producing these films. Are you sure you still
want them? All I know is Ang Lee filmed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

NOTE: It might be hard to get any of them in the Chinese language (putonghua/Mandarin), due to
censorship in China.

They're all Chinese movies, no? Heroes and HoFD both had theatrical releases here, not sure about

They do, actually. I've seen scripts for both Brokeback Mountain and Se, jie for sale in a
bookstore here. Don't know if there are online versions, but it looks like this is actually
something you can buy.

Ok long and short of it is I want to learn some 成都话 but do to the fact I don't live in
Chengdu this is a bit difficult. And before anyone really asks Mianyang and Chengdu do have enough
differences so that people in Chengdu make fun of the way Mianyang people speak 四川话.

I can learn a little bit from one of my friends but I fear it's not going to be enough and would
like to make some progress on my on. I already know some very basic stuff and being in Mianyang
helps a little bit with the feel of the language but I was hoping someone knew of resources
(online or not) that would help. And obviously ones that have audio would be preferred.

Another idea I am having is finding someone on skype or something like that but I don't like that
idea. All in all I want my one friend to teach me as even she has her own way of talking that is
different than many other 成都人 but I think I need to start having a little bit and learning
more before she will be willing to put in the effort (basically needs to see that I am not only
willing but am working on it)... Any thoughts would be great!

You can get fairly academic books about this kind of thing, but I've only ever seen self-study
materials for Shanghaihua and Cantonese. There's some stuff here, but I haven't looked in detail
so don't be surprised if it's useless.

You might get some pointers from this, but use with caution.

Edit: this looks like it might be the most useful.

I study in Chengdu. I think people living here have no difficult understanding mianyang people's
accent because some of my classmates come from mianyang.

have you every heared 《猫和老鼠川话版》(the cartoon "Tom and Jerry")?
I think it's a good source and funny...
i recommand you get the cartoon..
by the way, I think i can give you some help in learning 成都话...

Oh yeah...I have heard of it and can't believe I didn't think of it before...

I'm not concerned about the understandability of the two as I know a mianyang person can be
understood but I would rather learn the chengdu variety (for previous stated reasons).

One of my classmates[from mianyang] said there wasn't noticeable difference in MianYangHua and
ChengDuDua[To me, indeed as he spoke to me in MianYanHua]. Instead, ChongQingHua[my mother tongue]
and ChenDuHua ,a huge difference to me. Well, even that 'huge' difference doesn't make any sense
to those who are living outside SiChuan or ChongQing.
With the fact that ALL of my friends from other language regions never think there is the
difference between CQ Hua and SC Hua, I think, you'd better give a second thought on
differenciating ChenDuHua and MianYangHua.
By the way, If you can notice there is a slight[To me 'Huge', as I can tell where one is from just
by one's accent] difference between CQhua and CDhua, your Chinese must be so awesome that you are
likely better than most Chinese who speak dialects mainly.

Well samson I appreciate your offer and maybe you could start by posting some basic things on here
in regards to difference of sentence structure a few of the more common words (ie 晓得，啥子
and add a brief explanation of the pronunciation for everyones benefit- thankfully this part will
be easier for me as I hear these words every day and already know the pronunciation). And
hopefully everyone can benefit from this as well.....

Yetiboy...I know what you mean about Chongqing vs. Chengdu. The part I find the funniest is how
angry some chongqingers will get if you mention to them that they speak 四川话. They are so
adiment that it is not 四川话 it is 重庆话 even though it really is more of an accent issue
(with a few other minor differences). I know the difference between chengdu and mianyang are not
huge as you so put it but I will restate that I prefer the chengdu variety as my main reason for
learning to "speak" it and not just understand would be for a person that is from Chengdu and well
they get a kick out of the way mianyang people say 面包...

It wasn't that useful just really, really, REALLY entertaining. And the funniest part is is that
happens so often!!! You ask them to speak mandarin and they say of course and keep rattling on in
sichuanhua. here are my emotions towards this phenomenon

Just discovered BOTM - seems like a great idea - although I've been tending to look at fairly
basic books for 10-12 year olds so far - I'd love the challenge of a proper novel. I've read the
posts from when this got set up back in '05 - how does it tend to work out? Online books? What are
the thoughts on the January book? I'm in SH now so it's good to pick it up!

The way it tends to work is that someone gets all fired up about reading novels, suggests a book,
and then a bunch of people say they'll read it too, and then by the end of the month no-one does
(P.S. Muyongshi, yes I'm still on track to finish 每个姑娘都单纯 by the end of the month)

If you look in the BOTM forum, you'll see there are *large* gaps in continuity. That being said,
the last 2 1/2 months have been going ok, and I for one am making an effort to do more reading in
Chinese and am going to try and keep it going.

If you have a suggestion for a book, then towards the end of the month, you can start a new thread
suggesting it. If you're lucky, you'll have a couple of people respond and say they'll read it
with you.

Mostly it's online books, but for the current BOTM, I went and bought the paperback version,
because I don't like reading large amounts of text online.

For next month, I'm thinking about 球状闪电a novel that's been discussed in another thread on
Chinese Science Fiction.

posted and the two current ones are for December (there is still a few days left and it is a good
book) and coming up is January.

Also there's no reason why you can't go back and read a BOTM from past months - you might not be
reading it alongside others, but you're welcome to post as you read with any questions or comments
and it's pretty much guaranteed that at least a couple of people on here will have read it
previously and be able to help.

The translation requests forum is designed for four main types of question:

1) Tattoos. I think generally people on here will recommend you don't get a Chinese character
tattoo, and please do have a good long read of Hanzismatter to see why. There's a very real chance
of getting something incomprehensible, ugly, and permanent. But if you want to go ahead, read on.

2) Random objects. Bought a vase with a Chinese character on and curious about what it means?
Scribblings on the back on an old photo you think might be Chinese? Post away.

3) Chinese names - often for a tattoo, so see 1) as well. Could be either a traditional style two
or three character Chinese name, or a transliteration of an English name. Please have a read of
this and this to familiarize yourself with the issues involved in converting non-Chinese names
into Chinese characters.

4) Quick Chinese to English or English to Chinese translations. Please make an effort to work
these out yourself with a dictionary or online translation engine before posting, then ask us
about what you haven't been able to figure out.

Posting guidelines:
Give us as much information as possible - even if it's not directly relevant it makes for a more
interesting post and means you are more likely to get some help. "What does it say on this vase"
is ok, but a history of how this vase came to be in your family adds a bit more value.

If at all possible, make some efforts to find your own answers online, and let us know what you've
already done so we don't duplicate your work. Chinese versions of lots of English names can be
found online, etc.

If you are actually learning Chinese rather than just looking for a quick 'it means XXX' answer,

Renting an Apartment

Here are some key things to know about how to rent an apartment (aka flat) in China. [1].

[top]Know the Market

The first step, which can be done on the web: get to know the market. The real estate business in
China is mostly organised around compounds (小区 xiǎoqū in Chinese). Therefore knowing the
“compounds language” will help you a lot- which means remembering the compounds names,
locations and main characteristics. Location-specific information is available below.

[top]Scouting the Location

One of the main issues is the location of the building. Is it close to your school? Does it have
enough restaurants around to satisfy your taste for the coming months? Is there a supermarket?
What about public transport? Personally I do prefer a smaller flat but with a good location. It is
therefore interesting before starting to contact the real estate agencies to go for a day looking
around the major compounds. Walk or bicycle to feel the distance and then linger around to get to
know the neighbourhood. Better to do it in advance because you’ll have no time for that while
visiting the flat with the agent (he makes you visit the inside not the outside!).

[top]Things to Consider about the Building/Compound

How old is the building? If the building is very old, it may get cold in the winter if the heating
system is poor. If it is a brand new building, there may be issues with noise from renovations of
the unoccupied units.

Are there other buildings in the compound or in surrounding compounds that are still being
constructed? If so, there will be more dust/pollution and may be something to watch out for if you
suffer from allergies or asthma.

Does the building have elevator service? If so, is it in operation 24hrs, or does it shut off
after a certain time at night?

As for security, usually the larger and newer compounds are gated and are patrolled 24hrs by
guards.

[top]Real Estate Agencies

* First, forget about managing your deal from internet. In fact you’ll soon discover that most
of the classifieds on That’s Beijing are posted by real estate agents. So better go directly
to their offices and talk to them face to face. I’ve read here and there not to trust the real
estate agencies. My experience with the ones in Huaqing Jiayuan is in fact quite good; I never
felt as though I was being cheated (but who knows).
* Where to go ? if you are looking for a flat around BLCU, Beida or Qinghua, I would recommend
you to go within Huaqing Jiayuan compound (enter by a small gate on Chengfu lu). You’ll find
there many small agencies which specialise in finding apartments for foreign students – most
of them being Korean students in fact. These agencies have offers not only in Huaqing Jiayuan
but also all around the area - for instance they can find you a room within a Chinese family in
Dong Wang Zhuang. Normally there is always someone speaking a little bit of English in the
agency – at least enough to communicate. Of course it helps if you can manage a bit in Chinese.
* My advice is to spend the first day visiting half a dozen agencies – tell them what you want
and try to visit one or two flats with each agency. Do not decide yourself on the first day
(tell them in Chinese 我想考虑一下 wǒ xiǎng kǎolǜ yíxià "I want to think about it"
– which is a perfect sentence to leave and go to another agency). Take their business card and
leave your mobile number (the mobile is a must if you want them to contact you quickly in case
they have a new offer)
* All the agents I met were nice and helpful. Most of them are young (in their twenties) and
dynamic. It may sometimes not look "that professional" (some "so called" agencies are just desks
in the private houses of the "agents"; I even saw one agency sharing the place with a Chinese
doctor), but in a way they are quite efficient. But expect that it takes a little bit of time so
be patient. Creating trust is very important at that stage; on both sides! So once again be
patient, be nice, and smile.
* You’ll find also on the main roads some "more professional" real estate agencies like
WoAiWoJia (我爱我家) or Century 21. They focus on more expensive apartments. As far as I am
concerned my 2 months rental target was not possible with them.

[top] Contract, Fees, And Payment

* Agencies fees: NEVER PAY anything to any agency before you agree on an offer – which means
do not even pay the subway or the taxi which you will take you for your visits. In fact even
once the deal is done you should not have to pay anything to the agent – they get the
commission from the landlord (one month for a 12 month contract which means around 8%). The only
case where you should pay a commission is when the agency helps you to find a room to rent
within the apartment of a landlord or of another tenant (share flat) - in that case the agent
usually asks for 500 RMB once the deal is settled (but not before!). As far as I am concerned as
I rented a flat for myself, I did not have to pay anything to the agency.
* The contract (hétong 合同) is mostly bilingual (Chinese English) with some parts only in
Chinese (list of furnitures for instance). Note that the term of the rental has to be fixed (1
year, 6 months, or 2 months in my case). You normally pay 3 months + one month deposit when you
sign (I of course only paid 2 months + one month deposit). Sometimes you may have to pay a small
advance against an option on the rental - for instance I paid 1000 RMB directly to the landlord
against the option on the flat (written on a kind of contract in Chinese); then I paid the
balance the next day while signing the contract - but I do not think this is a very common
practice; normally you meet the landlord once and pay everything at once. Telephone,
Electricity, water and internet bills are all for you (as stated in the contract). The building
management fee and winter heating fee should be the landlord's responsibility, but I have heard
that many foreigners end up paying the winter heating fee. I think you should be able to
negotiate this - I don't know of any local renters who pay the winter heating fee.
* Short term rental: normally real estate agencies do not do anything less than 6 month rental
terms. So they were quite surprised when I asked for a 2 month rental; they however all helped
me to find something. Of course it made my search more difficult: a landlord has no advantage to
sign a 2 month contract when he could get a 6 month or one year one. While all the signing
contract & inventory process takes more than an hour, I understand that he does not want to lose
his time especially if he lives at the other side of Beijing. My only option to get something
was to put more money on the table – which means that I paid 3800 RMB for a 47 square meters 1
bedroom apartment in Dongsheng yuan while the normal price is around 2800. But this is still
cheaper than hotels around.
* Last point about the cash: getting all the cash at once is not an easy thing. If you wait for
a bank transfer remember that Chinese banks have limited foreign exchange services during the
weekend (or may even not be open) and that Friday is a very busy day there (a good hour to wait
for your turn). And with ATM remember that your VISA withdrawal authorisation has a good chance
to be well below the amount of cash you need. So think about it well ahead.

[top]Wudaokou, Beijing

That's Beijing classifieds is probably the first place to start; try also the Beijing City Guide
website. Apart from the prices you should also start learning about the locations names.

Here is a short list of popular complex in Wudaokou for a start:
* The "famous” Huaqing Jiayuan (华清家园) just west of wudaokou subway station – note
that the different blocks have different kind of apartments inside. I have seen there beautiful
modern places as well as dirty and old ones. On a long term basis you can get something very
nice for less than 3500 RMB (1 bedroom + 1 living room, around 50 square meters).
* Dongsheng yuan (东升园), just south of Huaqing Jiayuan – this is where I found my
apartment. Prices are less expensive than Huaqing Jiayuan but more than DongWangZhuang.
* The old but cheap Dong Wang Zhuang (东王庄) north of BLCU (just north of Xijiao Binguan);
there are many offers to share a room with a Chinese family for around 1500 RMB (as far as I can
remember). Cheap price but quite old and small.
* Furun Jiayuan (富润家园) on Xueyan Lu (学院路), east BLCU: modern place and good
location for BLCU students; you have restaurants and shops around. Price should be around what
you get at Huaqing Jiayuan (3500 for a one bedroom apartment). Note than Xueyan Lu has other
compounds which I forgot the names. They also tend to build a lot in the north of it on a road
called XueqingLu (学清路) - but mind the distance to the universities !
* Qing feng hua jing yuan(清枫华景园) north of the Forestry University (林大) which is
itself north of BLCU – a quite remote place with not a great choice of restaurants nor shops
around; but quite nice apartments and cheaper than Huaqing.
* You can also try the Wuwoo web-site to locate on a map some of these compounds. There is also
this interesting map in Chinese. If you have time you could also Google the compounds names (in
Chinese or Pinyin) which will give you pictures and maps.

I don't know Russian, and you obviously do, so I can't argue that, but I really consider the
Chinese 'h' to be softer than the German "ach" or the Arabic خ , which are both very guttural.

We should warn him that in Stuttgart, many people will speak Schwäbisch and not Hochdeutsch, so

"Milsch-kaffee" should be perfectly understandable to anyone in Germany. Many Germans with
immigrant background speak like that.

I personally find the "ch" in "Milch" to be closer to the Englich...

I consider it quite easy to learn.

The problem with German is that it has a steep learning curve, it has declensions, conjugates
verbs, has irregular past participles and a rather irregular...

Province to experience the life of the Tibetan people there on July 1.
They went to the home of a Tibetan in Langmusi Town. He has a TV set in

Three Gorges Dam highway passed provincial assessment

The special highway across the Three Gorges Dam with a 3.5 billion yuan
(US$437.5 million) investment passed the assessment of Hebei provincial
development and reform commission and communication department in Wuhan
on June 28. The recommended 57-kilometer route starts from Quxi Bridge of
Maoping Town in Zigui County (now Yinxingtuo Wharf) to reach the south
bank of Yichang's Changjiang River Highway Bridge and connect with the
Shanghai-Chongqing West Expressway which is under construction. This
project is busy with the prophase work at present.

83 million Chinese are suffering from mental disorders

Chinanews, June 6 �C 1% of the Chinese population are suffering from
schizophrenia, and the case is even higher with melancholia. The number
of sufferers of mental disorders has reached as high as 83 million, while
there are nearly 16 million who suffers from severe mental problems.
What��s more, over 30 million children and youths have psychic or
behavioral problems.
According to the data of the Ministry of Health, all these mental
diseases cost up to 20% of all the money people spend on medicine, and it
will reach 25% in the 21st century.
The cause and pathogenesis of most mental diseases still remain unknown,
thus early identification is difficult, and no treatment can turn up the
trumps.
Anyway, precautions against mental diseases can still be taken. Professor
Zhang Mingyuan, honorary president of the China Institute of Psychosis,
and vice chief officer of the Shanghai Mental Health Working Group, says
that experiments have already proved that if proper measures are taken as
regards the high risk group when some dangerous factors appear, there is
still possibility to prevent the disease or at least improve the
conditions of the patients.

Nanjing citizens buy houses at night

Numerous house buyers of Nanjing City transferred the name of the owner
in the property registration transaction center on Huaqiao Road in
Nanjing on the evening of May 31, 2006. It was seen at 8pm that evening
that both property buyers and sellers thronged to the center, which
should have closed at 5pm as usual, because they had to complete the
property ownership transfer before 12pm that day to reasonably avoid the
new regulation, which extended the time limit of business tax collection
from two years to five years.

Zhengzhou Real Estate Trading Center was crowded with citizens that were
engaged in secondary property deals on May 31, 2006.

Foreigners in need of 5m Chinese teachers by 2010

Volunteer Chinese language teachers from Fujian Normal University who
returned from the Philippines were displaying their honorary certificates
on April 10. As the vogue of learning Chinese heats up in the world, many
countries and regions find more Chinese learners. China National Office
for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language has dispatched over 1,200
volunteers to teach Chinese in 23 countries. (File)

Chinanws, May 25 - National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign
Language anticipated that up to 2010, the number of foreigners learning
Chinese will reach 100 million worldwide. If every twenty students need a
teacher, 5 million Chinese teachers will be needed to teach these
foreigners at that time.
In recent years, China has increasingly enhanced its comprehensive
national strength and gradually played a higher role in the world arena,
which provides a unique opportunity for the international popularization
of Chinese language.
A report about the living status of Chinese language released on May 22
shows that in 2005, the number of foreigners learning Chinese neared 40
million while the number of teachers engaged in teaching Chinese as a
foreign language worldwide only totaled 40,000. The ratio of teacher to
student was 1 to 1,000.
At present, about 6,000 teachers are working full-time or part-time
teaching Chinese as a foreign language inside China, and only half of
them are certified to teach Chinese to foreigners.

Oil painting about Zhu De returned to Beijing

The oil painting named "Zhu De, the Commander-in-Chief" created by a
well-known American portraitist in 1939, will be put for auction at the
Huachen 2006 Spring Auction to be held in Beijing's Jing Guang Center
Hotel on June 3. This legendary painting depicts the unique charm of an
easterner in the eyes of a westerner and reflects this Chinese Communist
Party leader's perseverance in fighting against the enemy. This portrait
returned to China after being treasured in the United States for over 50
years.

Korean youths rush to Liaoning

540 girls from South Korea entered China via the frontier defense port at
Dadong Harbor in Liaoning's Dandong City on May 16, 2006, commencing
their first tour to China. It is learnt that since May, Liaoning Province
has become a hotspot for Korean tourists and each week there are nearly
2,000 Korean visitors taking the international regular ship from Incheon
to Dandong Port.

Beijing's elephant goes to marry Shandong's "husband"

Liya, a female elephant in the Beijing Zoo, reached the Jinan Zoo in
Shandong Province after 10 hours of tossing trip on May 10 and finally
met her would-be husband Yakun. Both of them are Indian elephants. Liya,
a gift from Sri Lanka, is 27 years old and weighs 3.5 tons, while Yakun
is aged 20 and weighs nearly 5 tons. Yakun is tame, clever and never
choosy about food, though stubborn sometimes.

situated just opposite Chinese economic and trade exhibition center
district.

chain, Xiaoxiguan Branch is located at 97 Liwan Road of Guangzhou city
center. It is close to the Beijing Road on the east, adjacent to the
beautiful riverside of Pearl River, and also served by the Metro station
exit on the south, near Shangxiajiu Business Street, China Import &
Export Trade Exhibition Center and Final Railway Station on the north,
and close to America Bank ceter, Hong Kong and Shanghai banking and
international bank tower on the east. The hotel enjoys a good transport
link. It is only 1km from the final railway station and 25km from the
airport. Full deluxe bus express to Hongkong.

Home Inns Hotel(Xiaoxiguan Branches) offers 141 guestrooms, all of which
are located on the 6-7th floor and are well equipped. The hotel has all

Women don't talk more than men: study

Refuting the popular stereotype that females talk more than men,
researchers at The University of Texas have found women and men both use
an average of 16,000 words each day.

The psychology researchers published their findings in "Are women really
more talkative than men" in the July 6 issue of Science.

For more than a decade, researchers have claimed that women use far more
words each day than men. One set of numbers that is commonly tossed
around is that women use 20,000 words per day compared to only 7,000 for
men.

"These findings have been reported widely by national media and have
entered the cultural mainstream," James W. Pennebaker, co- author of the
study, said.

"Although many people believe the stereotypes of females as talkative and
males as reticent, there is no large-scale study that systematically has
recorded the natural conversations of large groups of people for extended
period of time."

For eight years, the psychology researchers have developed a method for
recording natural language using the electronically activated recorder
(EAR). The unobtrusive digital voice recorder tracks people's
interactions, including their conversations.

The researchers analyzed the transcripts of almost 400 university
students in the United States and Mexico whose daily interactions were
recorded between 1998 and 2004.

The research participants could not control the EAR, which automatically
records for 30 seconds every 12.5 minutes, and did not know when the
device was on.

The score is women with 16,215 words each day and men 15,669. The
difference by 546 words is "not statistically significant," the authors
conclude.

Are you ready for some "Mei shi gan lan qiu"?

The NFL is intent on finding out if that is indeed the case in China. The
league is venturing into untested territory and hoping the country's vast
marketplace will respond to its product.

Clearly, there are details to sort out. For one, the language. The
sport's vocabulary may resonate from Maine to Maui, but it's a poor fit
in Chinese. This, after all, is a country where American football is
largely unknown.

"We've had to come up with an entirely new nomenclature for the sport,"
Gordon Smeaton, an NFL vice president, said Friday during a promotional
tour with the New England Patriots. "This is a situation we don't face in
any other country and it will take some time."

For the record, in Chinese the game is known as "Mei shi gan lan qiu,"
which can mean "American-style rugby" or "American-style olive-shaped
ball," depending on the translation.

A touchdown is a "da zhen."

The quarterback is the "si fen wei" -- the one-fourth position.

And then there are the byzantine rules. New England Patriots tight end
Benjamin Watson has been spending a few days trying to explain strategy
and tactics to Chinese fans and reporters.

"We need to teach about throwing and catching and some of the rules of
the game," Watson said. "About where players line up. The game is almost
like a chess match."

Basketball has been played for 100 years in China. Baseball is an oddity,
but at least it has roots. The NFL may be the most popular game in the
United States, but it arrived in China only a few years ago and is
playing catch-up in a country of 1.3 billion with a swelling middle class.

"I think the reason we might be further behind is we're not an Olympic
sport," Smeaton said. "The NFL has only been active in China for the last
four years. I suppose we are further behind, so we have to work twice as
hard."

For now, the NFL is thinking small. It's been sponsoring a school-age
flag league involving 5,000 players. An NFL game is shown weekly on
China's CCTV. Smeaton said the NFL is about to announce a "much broader
distribution of games" in the country. It may also change viewing times
and may add more live telecasts. He said the annual Super Bowl telecast
drew up to 10 million viewers.

"The audience for the weekly game, we're happy with a couple of million
people watching the game," Smeaton said. "That's where we are."

He hinted that the NFL might use China as a market to test new
technology. He also talked up online games.

"We see a day in the not too distant future when Korean NFL fans will be
on line with Chinese fans in Shanghai, or with Indonesians or with Tokyo."

The NFL's target in China is men, ages 16-30, who have traveled and are
interested in foreign cultures. That's as many as 50 million people.

The NFL has sputtered selling American football in Europe, and on Friday
folded its developmental league there after 16 years. NFL Europa
reportedly was losing about US$30 million a season.

Smeaton suggested China would be a moneymaker with TV eventually
generating revenue.

"Once we get enough of a fan base, we expect that companies will come on
board (as sponsors)," Smeaton said.

The Patriots are ahead of most NFL teams in exploring China. It has a
Chinese-language website and a director of Chinese business development.
The team's replica jersey went on sale this week in China for 680 yuan.

"Any league in China would be years and years away," Smeaton said. "The
developmental work takes so much time because you have to develop
athletes. But you cannot snap your fingers and make that happen."

The NFL is also trying to recover from a minor embarrassment. It planned
a preseason game in Beijing in August, between New England and the
Seattle Seahawks, but scrapped it on short notice. The NFL said it could
not stage that exhibition and the regular-season game between the Miami
Dolphins and New York Giants this fall in London.

Playing in Beijing in 2009 is the new target. The game may be held in the
new 91,000-seat National Stadium, called the "Bird's Nest," which is
going up for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"This now gives us an opportunity to build a fan base and we have another
two years to get prepared," Smeaton said.

Watson said the NFL would benefit from the likes of its own Yao Ming, the
Chinese center now starring in the NBA. But, for now, he sees a
foundation forming.

"Strategy, teamwork, work ethic -- these are all things that are deeply
rooted in Chinese tradition," Watson said. "To have a player in the NFL
from China, from anywhere, this creates better international relations
and obviously a big fan base."

"Everything starts somewhere," he added. "In America, football just
didn't start off in the NFL. It started off as a small game that people
looked at as kind of crazy. Now it's the most popular game in America."

LONDON: The family and colleagues of Alan Johnston, a BBC reporter
kidnapped by Islamists in Gaza, urged his captors yesterday not to harm
him after he appeared in a video wearing what he said was an explosives
belt.

Johnston's father said he and his family were "most concerned and
distressed" about the video, in which the 45-year-old Briton said his
kidnappers had threatened to blow up the belt of explosives if force was
used to free him.

The BBC also said it was "very distressing" to see Johnston "being
threatened in this way".

"Our thoughts, of course, are with Alan in his present predicament. We
earnestly request his abductors to release Alan unharmed in any way,"
Johnston's father said in a statement.

In the one-minute-long video posted by the Army of Islam on a website
used by militants, Johnston looked tired but unharmed and appealed to the
Hamas movement and the British government "not to resort to tactics of
force in an effort to end this".

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in Gaza, where the movement took
control in a civil war more than a week ago, that contacts were under way
with Johnston's captors to gain his release through peaceful means.

"We will work in every way to free Alan Johnston without putting his life
at risk," Barhoum said. "Preserving Alan's life and freedom is better
than shedding blood and maybe that will cost us more time."

Johnston appeared in the video wearing a white and blue belt around his
torso with black shoulder straps over a dark red sweater in the undated
video filmed against a black background.

Johnston's captors say they want Britain to free Muslim prisoners,
particularly Islamist cleric Abu Qatada, in exchange for the reporter's
release.

Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip say they are pressing the kidnappers to
free Johnston, but Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the Hamas-led
government sacked by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah, said
on Sunday his group had not used force to try to free Johnston at the
request of the British government, fearing he might be harmed in the
process.

"We ask those holding Alan to avoid him being harmed by releasing him
immediately," the BBC said in a statement.

Johnston was abducted in Gaza on March 12 and is believed to be being
held by the Army of Islam.

LONDON, June 20 - Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins said he
narrowly escaped death or serious injury after being shot at while
driving in Lagos.

The Nigeria international escaped unhurt but a friend was injured after
masked gunmen sprayed his Mercedes with bullets.

"They shot indiscriminately and tried to kill all the occupants of the
car. They weren't there to rob me but to finish me off," the 22-year-old
former Inter Milan player said in Wednesday's Sun newspaper.

"I thought I was going to die. They executed it like professional hired
assassins. It was hell.

"I was dead in my heart and soul. It all happened like something in the
movies."

According to the report, the incident happened near a petrol station in
the Nigerian city where Martins grew up and still owns an apartment.

"How I managed to escape is still shocking and unbelievable," added the
player who scored 11 league goals in his first season at St James Park.
"Maybe someone up there loves me more than I could imagine."

Martins said he would be reluctant to return to Nigeria for international
duty.

"I don't feel safe in Lagos any more," he said. "When the situation gets
out of control I don't think coming home is something I can even
contemplate."

ROME, June 13 - Italian Serie B side Arezzo failed in their bid to escape
relegation to the third division on Wednesday after a civil court upheld
the penalty handed down to them in last year's match-fixing scandal.

Last August, a sports court ordered the Tuscan club to start the 2006-07
season on minus six points after they were found guilty of seeking
favours from referees.

They finished the season inside the Serie B relegation zone, three points
from safety.

Wednesday's decision by a regional court in Lazio effectively ended their
hopes of avoiding the drop.

Several other clubs, including Serie A giants Juventus, AC Milan,
Fiorentina and Lazio, were also punished in last year's scandal, but
Arezzo were the only ones to take their appeal to the civil courts.

CHICAGO - Injuries from trendy roller shoes are far more numerous than
previously thought, contributing to about 1,600 emergency room visits
last year, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The injuries were mostly in children, the target market for the wheeled
shoes that send kids cruising down sidewalks, across playgrounds and
through shopping mall crowds.

Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission,
said last week that the agency knew of at least 64 roller shoe-related
injuries and one death between September 2005 through December 2006.

The new higher estimate is based on a more recent and thorough
examination by staff statisticians of data reported to the agency,
Wolfson told the AP Wednesday.

The update follows new safety advice posted online Tuesday by the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which recommends helmets, wrist
protectors and knee and elbow pads for kids who wear wheeled shoes.

The academy's advice stems from recent reports from around the globe
about doctors treating cracked skulls; broken wrists, arms and ankles;
and dislocated elbows in kids injured wearing the shoes.

On Monday, a report in June's Pediatrics said 67 children were treated
for roller-shoe injuries at a hospital in Dublin, Ireland, over 10 weeks
last summer.

Heelys, the most popular brand, are sold in 70 countries. They're made by
Carrollton, Texas-based Heelys Inc. The shoes feature removable wheels in
each heel that pop out when wearers shift their weight to their heels.

The company responded to the higher injury estimate by releasing a
statement about their shoes' safety from Edward Heiden, president of
Heiden Associates, a product safety consulting firm that Heelys hired to
study the shoes.

"The injury rate of using wheeled footwear has not increased in the past
15 months. More wheeled shoes are being sold and so, as you would expect,
more incidents are being reported," Heiden said.

Heelys reported in April that a Heiden Associates analysis of data from
the government's product safety commission showed the shoes have a lower
injury rate than many other sports, including skateboarding, inline
skating and even swimming.

Heiden said the new numbers confirm that previous analysis, "which tells
us using wheeled footwear is 42 times safer than basketball, 29 times
safer than bicycling, and 18 times safer than skateboarding."

McLaren deny favouring Alonso over Hamilton

MONACO, May 27 - McLaren denied favouring double world champion Fernando
Alonso in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday after rookie team mate Lewis
Hamilton suggested he had been forced into a supporting role.

Team boss Ron Dennis said the 22-year-old joint championship leader and
runner-up to Spaniard Alonso in a dominant McLaren one-two, would have
won had the safety car been deployed.

For the first time this season, the Briton appeared less than ecstatic
with second place -- his fifth podium in five Formula One starts.

"I have the number two on my car, and I am the number two driver," he
told a news conference.

Hamilton had qualified on the front row with a far heavier car than
Alonso on pole position.

Alonso led from the start but when Hamilton had the chance to build up a
gap, after the Spaniard's first pitstop, he was unable to do so because
the team called him in to refuel earlier than expected.

"I was actually quite surprised because I was fuelled to go five, nearly
six, laps longer than Fernando and they stopped me with three laps," said
Hamilton. "That's unfortunate but it's the way it goes."

Alonso explained that he had in fact gone two laps longer than scheduled
because he had used less fuel than expected in the opening laps and
Dennis was adamant there was no hidden agenda.

He said his job was to make difficult decisions and Monaco was a unique
circuit where the introduction of the safety car, deployed in four of the
last five years, could wreck the best-laid plans.

The two drivers therefore had to be on radically different strategies.

"Everybody feels I'm sure, and a lot of people will feel it in England,
that there is some favouritism or some penalisation that is given to
either Lewis or Fernando," he added.

"But we are scrupulously fair at all times in how we run this grand prix
team.

"We will never favour one driver, no matter who it is. We never have, we
never will."

Dennis confirmed he had instructed both drivers to slow their pace after
the first pitstop to limit risks and protect the one-two. With no major
accidents, the safety car remained absent.

"I don't like to slow drivers down, I don't like them to be frustrated,"
he said. "I don't like to see these things happen, because I am an
absolute racer. It's just the way you have to win the Monaco Grand Prix,
which is what we've done.

"If the safety car was deployed, Lewis Hamilton would have won the race."

China's gold hope Luo Wei, the Olympic and world champion, was knocked
out in women's under 72-kilo semi-final on Sunday at the Beijing
taekwondo worlds.

Luo is China's top player and gold medal hopeful at the championships,
but lost to Lee In Jong from South Korea 3-1 at the semifinal.

As the Athens Olympic champion and 2003 World Championships gold
medalist, Luo enjoyed thundering applause and cheering from the home
crowd, but it was Lee's realm on the platform.

Luo received two warnings, which caused one-point deduction in the
opening round for being inactive. Lee kicked a point down to lead 1 to -1
to end the first bout.

Lee attacked fiercely to establish a 4-1 lead in the second and further
expanded her advantage to 5-1 early in the third. Luo's counterattack
turned out fruitless and never scored again.

In spite of two penalties in the last bout, Lee stood out to win 3-1.

"The World Championships attracted the best players worldwide. Each
athlete gave the best here and no one knew what would happen, " said Luo
after the duel.

"I inflicted a serious injury before the tournament. The injury affected
my performance a lot. I tried my best and I am satisfied with the result.

"I am still in recovery and far from my best form today. The injury is
the main reason for my defeat. My leg hurt and I couldn't move around
swiftly, so I missed a few opportunities to score," said Luo. "There is
no problem with my strength, but the hurting leg is a big hindrance for
me."

"We met in semi-final of Doha Asian Games, in which I beat her by one
point. I am sure she has been studying me after that. She is a very
experienced player and deserves the victory," added Luo.

"What I will do next is to recover from the injury soon."

BELFAST - Northern Ireland's Protestant and Roman Catholic leaders,
arch-foes during decades of bloodshed, launched a new power-sharing
government in the British province on Tuesday aiming to put a final end
to violence.

Hardline Protestant cleric Ian Paisley and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness
took a pledge of office as first minister and deputy first minister in
the government that will have authority over local issues in the province.

The ceremony could help to cement political stability in the province
which, since a 1998 peace accord, has largely ended 30 years of sectarian
conflict that killed 3,600 people.

"I affirm the terms of the pledge of office," Paisley said, binding
himself to a pledge which includes a commitment to non-violence and
support for policing in the British province.

McGuinness repeated the words at a meeting of the Northern Ireland
assembly at Belfast's Stormont building.

The ceremony put into practice a March 26 agreement between the main
Protestant and Catholic groups, Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP)
and Sinn Fein, political ally of the Irish Republican Army (IRA)
guerrilla group, to share power after years of deadlock.

Unlike previous, failed attempts at power-sharing, the leaders appear
determined this time to make it work.

"It is a special day because we are making a new beginning and I believe
we're starting on a road which will bring us back to peace and
prosperity," Paisley said as he arrived at Stormont.

McGuinness said it was a historic day, noting: "What we're going to see
today is one of the mightiest leaps forward that this process has seen in
almost 15 years."

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said power-sharing proved that dialogue and
perseverance could bring results.

"We're going to change the political landscape from here out," he said.
"We are going to succeed."

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern,
who have guided the Northern Ireland peace process for the past decade,
were due to speak at a reception later.

Blair, who plans to stand down as prime minister soon, sees the latest
power-sharing deal between the Protestant majority and Catholic minority
as one of the main achievements of his 10 years in power after previous
deals proved short-lived.

CHEMISTRY

British Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain, who signed an order on
Monday transferring local government powers from London back to the
province, praised the leaders' determination.

"Given that until literally a few weeks ago they'd never even passed a
word between each other... the personal chemistry between them is very
good," Hain told BBC radio

"...We really are at the dawn of a new democratic future... I think it
will stick and I think it will work," he said.

Paisley and McGuinness have made a good start to their new partnership,
smiling and chatting when they greeted European Commission President Jose
Manuel Barroso last week.

It has been a strange role reversal for the 80-year-old Paisley who has
been an outspoken defender of Northern Ireland's British links and until
recently refused to talk to Sinn Fein, which he viewed as
indistinguishable from the IRA that waged a bloody 30-year campaign
against British rule.

McGuinness, a former member of the IRA, and Sinn Fein want to see the
province united with the Irish Republic to the south.

The home-rule assembly was first set up under the 1998 Good Friday peace
deal, but Britain suspended it and resumed direct rule from London in
2002 after Sinn Fein offices at Stormont were raided by police
investigating an alleged IRA spy ring.

The peace dividend is evident in Belfast where the economy has picked up
and construction cranes dominate the skyline.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The bloodbath lasted nine minutes - enough time for
Seung-Hui Cho to unleash 170 rounds from his two pistols, or about one
shot every three seconds.

During that time, Virginia Tech and city police spent three minutes
dashing across campus to the scene. Then they began the agonizing process
of breaking into the chained-shut building, which took another five
minutes.

Once inside, as they sprinted toward the sounds of gunfire inside Norris
Hall, Cho put a bullet through his head and died in a classroom alongside
his victims.

A timeline of the rampage emerged Wednesday as police provided new
details about what they uncovered in the 10 days since Cho committed the
worst mass shooting in modern US history.

The five minutes police spent breaking into the building proved to be
crucial. During that time, Cho picked off his victims with a hail of
gunfire. He killed himself after police shot through the doors and rushed
toward the carnage.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller praised the officers' response
time, noting that had police simply rushed into the building without a
plan, many would have likely died right along with the staff and
students. She said officers needed to assemble the proper team, clear the
area and then break through the doors.

"If you go in with your backs turned, you're never going back," Geller
said. "There's gotta be some sort of organization."

Some police and security experts question the five-minute delay, saying
authorities should have charged straight into the melee.

"You don't have time to wait," said Aaron Cohen, president of IMS
Security of Los Angeles, who has trained SWAT teams around the country
since 2003. "You don't have time to pre-plan a response. Even if you have
a few guys, you go."

Cohen said that a trained SWAT team should have been able to get inside a
locked building in less than a minute. There was no SWAT team at the
Virginia Tech scene.

Police rapid response to school violence has become an important issue in
the last decade.

After the Columbine massacre in 1999, police around the country adopted
new policies for so-called "active shooters." Police would no longer
respond to emergencies such as school shootings by surrounding a building
and waiting for the SWAT team. Instead, the first four officers rush into
the building and attempt to immediately end the threat. This system was
used to end a 2003 school hostage standoff in Spokane, Wash.

Tom Corrigan, former member of the NYPD-

FBI terrorism task force and a retired New York City detective, said five
minutes seems like a long time when gunfire is being heard, but he said
it's tough to second-guess officers in such a chaotic situation.

"I would have liked to have seen them bust down the door, smash windows,
go around to another door, do everything to get inside fast," he said.
"But it's a tough call because these officers put their lives on the line
on a daily basis and I am sure they did the best they could."

State Police Superintendent Col. W. Steven Flaherty, who is overseeing
the investigative team looking at the shootings, said police have been
unable to answer the case's most vexing questions: Why the spree began at
the West Ambler Johnston dormitory, and why 18-year-old freshman Emily
Hilscher was the first victim.

"We talk about possible motives and theories and whatnot, but we don't
have any evidence to suggest anything," Flaherty said.

Witnesses place Cho outside West Ambler Johnston shortly before 7:15
a.m., when he fired the two shots that killed Hilscher and 22-year-old
senior Ryan Clark, a resident assistant at the dorm, Flaherty said.

It is not known how Cho got in.

Police searched Hilscher's e-mails and phone records looking for a link.
While Flaherty would not discuss exactly what police found, he said
neither Cho's nor Hilscher's records have revealed a connection.

"We certainly don't have any one motive that we are pursuing at this
particular time, or that we have been able to pull together and
formulate," Flaherty said. "It's frustrating because it's so personal,
because we see the families and see the communities suffering, and we see
they want answers."

In addition to the 170 rounds Cho fired inside Norris, investigators
found unused ammunition in the building, though Flaherty was unsure how
much was left. Investigators have compiled 500 pieces of evidence from
Norris Hall alone.

Virginia Tech police chief Wendell Flinchum said Cho had a class this
semester in Norris Hall, although it was not scheduled to meet on the day
of the rampage.

Flaherty cautioned that it could be months before the case is closed. The
investigation will begin slowing down as authorities examine evidence, he
said.

BOULDER, Colo. - A University of Colorado student was arrested after
making comments that classmates deemed sympathetic toward the gunman
blamed for killing 32 students and himself at Virginia Tech, authorities
said.

During a class discussion of Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech, the
student "made comments about understanding how someone could kill 32
people," university police Cmdr. Brad Wiesley said.

Several witnesses told investigators the student said he was "angry about
all kinds of things from the fluorescent light bulbs to the unpainted
walls, and it made him angry enough to kill people," according to a
police report. Witnesses "said they were afraid of him and afraid to come
to class with him," Wiesley said.

The student, identified by police as Max Karson of Denver, was arrested
Tuesday on suspicion of interfering with staff, faculty or students of an
education institution. He had a court appearance set for Wednesday
afternoon.

His father, Michael Karson, told the Camera newspaper that the comments
may have been misinterpreted and questioned whether his son's free speech
rights had been violated.

"I would have hoped that state officials would know their First Amendment
better than they seem to," he said.

University spokesman Bronson Hilliard said privacy laws prevented him
from releasing personal information about the student.

At Oregon's Lewis & Clark College, another student was detained by campus
police Wednesday shortly before a vigil for the Virginia Tech victims
when he was spotted wearing an ammunition belt. Portland police later
determined that it was "a fashion accessory" made of spent ammunition,
and said the man did not have a weapon. The belt was confiscated.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A Virginia Tech senior from South Korea killed at least
30 people locked inside a classroom building in the deadliest shooting
rampage in modern US history, the university and police said Tuesday.

Ballistics tests also found that one of the guns used in that attack was
also used in a shooting two hours earlier at a Virginia Tech dorm that
left two people dead, Virginia State Police said.

Police identified the classroom shooter as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior
from South Korea who was in the English department and lived in another
dorm on campus. They said Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and
there was no indication Tuesday of a possible motive.

"He was a loner, and we're having difficulty finding information about
him," school spokesman Larry Hincker said.

Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because
the information had not been announced, said Cho's fingerprints were
found on the guns used in both shootings. The serial numbers on the two
weapons had been filed off, the officials said.

One law enforcement official said Cho's backpack contained a receipt for
a March purchase of a Glock 9 mm pistol.

Col. Steve Flaherty, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, said it
was reasonable to assume that Cho was the shooter in both attacks but
that link was yet definitive.

"There's no evidence of any accomplice at either event, but we're
exploring the possibility," he said.

Cho was a permanent legal resident of the United States, according to a
Homeland Security Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity
because the information had not been announced.

A memorial service was planned for the victims Tuesday afternoon at the
university, and President Bush planned to attend, the White House said.
Gov. Tim Kaine was flying back to Virginia from Tokyo for the 2 p.m.
convocation.

Two students told NBC's "Today" show they were unaware of the dorm
shooting when they walked into Norris Hall for a German class where the
gunman later opened fire.

The victims in Norris Hall were found in four different classrooms and a
stairwell, Flaherty said. Cho was found dead in one of those classrooms,
he said.

Derek O'Dell, his arm in a cast after being shot, described a shooter who
fired away in "eerily silence" with "no specific target - just taking out
anybody he could."

After the gunman left the room, students could hear him shooting other
people down the hall. O'Dell said he and other students barricaded the
door so the shooter couldn't get back in - though he later tried.

"After he couldn't get the door open he tried shooting it open ... but
the gunshots were blunted by the door," O'Dell said.

A federal law enforcement official said Tuesday he had been told by other
federal law enforcement officials that the two guns recovered in the
shooting had had their serial numbers scraped off. The official spoke on
condition of anonymity because the information had not been announced.

The slayings left people of this once-peaceful mountain town and the
university at its heart praying for the victims and struggling to find
order in a tragedy of such unspeakable horror it defies reason.

"For Ryan and Emily and for those whose names we do not know," one woman
pleaded in a church service Monday night.

It seems that American schools are violence-haunted schools. No matter
where the killer is from, it's in America that the blood shedding
incident is happening. It is worth the attention of managing authorities
of both schools and government,after all, body safety is the most
essential right.

Another mourner added: "For parents near and far who wonder at a time
like this, 'Is my child safe?'"

That question promises to haunt Blacksburg long after Monday's attacks.
Investigators offered no motive, and the gunman's name was not
immediately released.

The shooting began about 7:15 a.m. on the fourth floor of West Ambler
Johnston, a high-rise coed dormitory where two people died.

Police were still investigating around 9:15 a.m., when a gunman wielding
two handguns and carrying multiple clips of ammunition stormed Norris
Hall, a classroom building a half-mile away on the other side of the
2,600-acre campus.

At least 20 people were taken to hospitals after the second attack, some
seriously injured. Many found themselves trapped after someone,
apparently the shooter, chained and locked Norris Hall doors from the
inside.

Students jumped from windows, and students and faculty carried away some
of the wounded without waiting for ambulances to arrive.

SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed
over the campus. A student used his cell-phone camera to record the sound
of bullets echoing through a stone building.

Graeme Dott won the title of the 2007 China open snooker tournament after
beating Jamie Cope 9-5 here on Sunday.

The Scot took the official world number one spot after winning the China
title.

Dott dominated the final as Cope looked jaded after last night's
gruelling semi-final against Barry Hawkins,

Dott won six of the eight frames in the first session for a 6-2 lead in
the best-of-17-frame final.

Dott put together breaks of 72, 60, 70 and 95 to open a four-frame
advantage and leave himself needing three more to take the title.

He took the first frame 71-46 before Cope struck back with a break of 65
to level the match.

Cope fought back after Dott had won the third frame, tying up the match
at 2-2 with a run of 97.

However, Dott won the next with breaks of 72 and 60 before taking
advantage of a mistake by his opponent to open a 4-2 lead.

The 29-year-old Dott lost momentum when the match resumed as Cope trailed
back 6-5 after runs of 91, 77 and 46.

Dott proved his superb form in the tournament after outplaying cope in
the last three breaks after snatching 124, 120 and 64 points.

This is the first time these two have met in professional competition.

Ding Junhui battled through his opening match to keep his fans happy at
the Honghe Industrial 2007 World Snooker China Open.

The 19-year-old snooker genius from the Jiangsu Province, sporting
reddish highlights in his hair, beat Adrian Gunnell 5-3 to reach the last
32 in Beijing.

Though he compiled breaks of 82, 97 and 130 in taking a 3-1 lead, Ding
struggled to close the match out after the interval and made several
unforced errors as Telford��s Gunnell got back to 4-3.

Ding eventually sealed victory to set up a match with Barry Hawkins, but
his millions of followers in China know he must improve if he is to

In qualifying for this event, Jimmy White saved his professional status
for next season, and he continued his run with a 5-2 defeat of Zheng Peng.

The Whirlwind was due to face Stephen Lee next but the Trowbridge
player'ss withdrawal means that White proceeds straight to the last 16 -
the first time he has reached that stage of a ranking event since the
2005 Grand Prix.

From 2-1 down, the former UK and Masters champion won four consecutive
frames with a top break of 61.

"I nicked the first frame on the colours, otherwise it could have been
different," admitted the 44-year-old Londoner, who failed to win a
knock-out match in the season's other six ranking events.

"At my age you can play well one day, then badly the next. I've got three
days now to practise at the hotel and make sure I play well on Thursday.
I still love this game and I'll keep playing as long as I enjoy it."

Liu Chuang, a 16-year-old from the Liaoning Province, set up a dream tie
with his hero Ronnie O'Sullivan by edging out Andy Hicks 5-4.

Joe Jogia lost 5-1 to Yu Delu, the 19-year-old from the Shanxi Province
compiled runs of 69 and 60.

Wins for five of the eight wild cards means that there are six Chinese
players in the last 32

Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest faces four misdemeanor charges
stemming from a dispute with his wife at home earlier this month.

The charges were filed late Tuesday. Placer County Deputy District
Attorney Dan Quick said Artest will be arraigned Thursday on charges of
battery and corporal injury to a spouse, false imprisonment and
dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. Each carries a maximum
sentence of one year in prison.

Artest was arrested March 5 at his estate in Loomis, 25 miles northeast
of Sacramento, and was released from custody after posting a $50,000 bond.

A Placer County sheriff's report said Artest grabbed a woman and pushed
her down, then slapped her face during an argument. The report, which did
not identify the victim because it was a domestic violence incident, said
Artest took a phone from the woman the first time she tried to call 911.

When she reached 911, the woman at first complained that Artest was
taking the family Hummer from the home, according to a recording of the
call released by the sheriff's department. The woman then told a
dispatcher that her finger was cut and her leg scratched, and that she
broke the windshield of the vehicle.

Five days after his arrest, Artest said he'd stumbled as a father and
husband and apologized to his wife and family, as well as to the Kings
and his teammates. He sat out two games, but was not suspended and
continued to receive his salary.

Artest's attorney, William Portanova, said Wednesday that he had not yet
seen the charges.

"Ron's first priority remains his family, and the process will simply
have to work itself through," he said.

Portanova declined to say whether Artest has had any contact with his
family since the incident.

"The family continues to request privacy during these difficult times,"
he said.

Immediately after the arrest, the county sheriff's department obtained an
emergency protective order that prevented Artest from returning to his
home or contacting the woman until she could obtain a restraining order.
Officials with the Placer County clerk's office and sheriff's department
said Wednesday they had no record that she had sought or obtained such an
order.

Calls Wednesday to Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, were not immediately
returned. Kings spokesman Darrin May said he had no immediate comment.

It was the latest in a string of incidents that have marred Artest's
basketball career.

As a member of the Indiana Pacers, he was the central figure in the 2004
brawl with Detroit Pistons fans. He received a 73-game suspension and
lost almost $5 million in salary for jumping into the stands and throwing
punches. Artest and teammate Stephen Jackson were sentenced to one year
of probation and 60 hours of community service after pleading no contest
to misdemeanor assault charges.

Artest joined the Kings in January 2006.

Sheriff's deputies said they have responded to 911 calls from Artest's
home five other times since last August, and at least two of the calls
involved domestic disturbances.

Last month, county animal-control officers seized his Great Dane, Socks,
because it wasn't being fed. The dog has since been released to the
custody of one of Artest's lawyers.

Iran seeks UN OK to make nuclear case

UNITED NATIONS - Iran's UN Mission sent a letter Thursday requesting that
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad be allowed to speak before the Security
Council when it votes on new sanctions against Tehran for its refusal to
suspend uranium enrichment, the council president said.

South Africa's UN Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo said he would present Iran's
request to the 14 other council members Friday.

"The Security Council will have to decide whether they accommodate this
or not," said Kumalo, whose country holds the rotating council
presidency. "The challenge right now is that we don't know when this
could be."

Kumalo said under the UN Charter and Security Council rules, if a member
state has an issue before the council and requests to appear before its
members, "this must be considered."

Richard Grenell, spokesman for the US Mission to the United Nations, said
the US has received official visa requests for an Iranian delegation.

He refused to disclose any details, but a council diplomat said Iran
asked for visas for 38 people to accompany Ahmadinejad, including Foreign
Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali
Larijani.

The request from Iran's UN Ambassador Javad Zarif arrived as the
council's five veto-wielding members - the United States, Russia, China,
Britain and France - and Germany agreed on a modest package of new
sanctions to step up the pressure on Tehran to suspend enrichment.

Their draft resolution was presented to the 10 non-permanent members, who
were not part of the negotiations and will now send it to their capitals
to be studied.

The full council isn't expected to discuss the draft resolution until
Wednesday, Kumalo said, so the earliest possible vote would be late next
week, though the timetable could change.

Iran has rejected UN demands that it halt enrichment, insisting its
nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at producing energy. The US and its
European allies are concerned its real aim is to produce nuclear weapons.

Earlier Thursday, Ahmadinejad called the Security Council an
"illegitimate" body and said any new sanctions imposed on his country
would only stimulate it to be self-sufficient and further develop nuclear
technology.

Acting US Ambassador Alejandro Wolff, reacting to that comment and the
possibility of the Iranian president addressing the council, said: "I
find it ironic that a president who's quoted today saying that he tears
up Security Council resolutions and has no respect for what the council
does, is interested in coming and speaking to the council."

Lee pressed for North Korea to follow through on its breakthrough Feb. 13 agreement with the US and four other countries to shut down its sole operating nuclear reactor in 60 days, and to eventually dismantle all its atomic programs. "It is important to make efforts to ensure that South and North Korea cooperate and six countries each assume their responsibilities," Lee said. Kim Yong Nam also called for the two Koreas to work together to reunify the peninsula, which was divided after World War II and remains officially at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a cease-fire, not a peace treaty. As talks resumed Friday, the two sides agreed to resume reunions of families split across their border. A South Korean official said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing talks that reunions over a video link will be held this month, with face-to-face meetings set for May. The reunions are a highly emotional issue between the North and South as many of those hoping to see relatives are elderly and running out of time to see their families. Millions of Koreans were separated following the division of the Korean peninsula in 1945 and the 1950-53 Korean War. The North had been expected to agree this week to restarting the reunions, which were put on hold last year after the missile tests. South Korea has been one of the North's main aid sources since the two nations held their first and only summit in 2000. This week's meetings are the 20th Cabinet-level talks since then. But South Korea halted rice and fertilizer shipments to the North after it test-fired a barrage of missiles last July, and relations worsened following North Korea's Oct. 9 underground nuclear test. South Korea has been hesitant at this week's talks, which run through Friday, to immediately restart aid without seeing the North take real steps to dismantle its nuclear program. Suspects questioned over Pakistan airport attack

ISLAMABAD - Pakistani investigators have been quizzing two suspects after
an Islamic militant was killed by his own hand grenade in a brazen attack
on Islamabad international airport, according to officials.

The attack late Tuesday was the fifth in less than two weeks in Pakistan,
raising fears that Taliban militants fighting Pakistani troops near the
Afghan border are trying to embarrass President Pervez Musharraf.

The two suspects were in a car which drove the attacker to the airport
car park, where he exchanged gunfire with security forces after they
stopped him at a security checkpost, injuring three police. He then died
in the blast.

"We are interrogating two people - one of them is a driver and the other
one was also said to be travelling in the same car," a senior security
official told AFP.

Officials hoped they could provide leads to the group behind the attack
amid fears the militants are "desperate" to send a message to military
ruler Musharraf's government.

Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao confirmed there were three men in the car
but gave no further details.

He however said the incident was no longer being considered as a suicide
attack because "when we searched the body we did not find any explosive
belt on him."

"The circumstantial evidence does not suggest that it was a suicide
attack. He might have come for a hit and run attack," Brigadier Javed
Cheema, head of the interior ministry's national crisis management cell,
told AFP.

"When police tried to check the car he pulled a mask on his face and
started firing. He ran towards the car park and threw a grenade which did
not explode. Three bullets hit him in the chest and one grenade was found
on his body."

The bearded bomber's bloodstained body, with the legs mangled by the
blast, was shown to journalists after the explosion. Several cars were
also damaged in the blast and the exchange of fire.

The airport was briefly closed and several flights were delayed or
diverted.

Cheema said security had been further beefed up at other airports.

Musharraf flew in to nearby Chaklala Airbase hours after the attack
following a trip to Iran and Turkey.

The president angered Islamic hardliners by abandoning Pakistan's support
for the Taliban regime after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United
States and launching a crackdown on militants.

He has escaped two assassination attempts blamed on Al-Qaeda in 2003.

This is a message to the government that they can strike at the most
sensitive areas," a top intelligence official told AFP on condition of
anonymity.

Snowe's decision to join the effort came as the White House and GOP
leaders struggled to keep Republicans from endorsing the resolution, and
raised questions about how many more defections there might be.

"Now is time for the Congress to make its voice heard on a policy that
has such significant implications for the nation, the Middle East and the
world," Snowe said in a written statement.

Earlier, Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican and potential 2008
presidential candidate, joined Democrats at a news conference announcing
the resolution.

"I will do everything I can to stop the president's policy as he outlined
it Wednesday night," Hagel said. "I think it is dangerously
irresponsible."

Even as skeptical Republicans were summoned to private meetings with Bush
and national security adviser Stephen Hadley at the White House, Bush's
aides made clear that the Capitol Hill challenge would be met
aggressively by the administration.

Presidential spokesman Tony Snow said resolutions passed by Congress will
not affect Bush's decision-making.

"The president has obligations as a commander in chief," he said. "And he
will go ahead and execute them."

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., a chief
author of the Senate resolution, said it says "we do not support
increased troops, deeper military involvement" and calls for shifting the
mission of US troops from combat to training, counterterrorism and
protecting Iraq's territorial integrity.

He said it also calls for "the greater engagement of other countries in
the region in the stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq."

The resolution does not call for a withdrawal of troops or threaten
funding of military operations, as many Democrats have suggested.
Instead, the legislation says the US should transfer responsibility to
the Iraqis "under an appropriately expedited timeline," though it is not
specific.

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, told reporters that she is considering
supporting the resolution and said she believed it heads in the right
direction.

"I want to make sure it's something I can support," said Snowe, who has
been adamantly opposed to the increase in troops.

The group planned to introduce the resolution Wednesday, with a review by
the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 24, one day after Bush
delivers his State of the Union address.

Hagel's agreement to help Democrats champion the resolution amounts to a
setback to the administration and to Bush, who has argued vehemently that
some 21,500 additional US troops are needed to help the Iraqi government
calm sectarian violence in Baghdad and Anbar province.

Romance in sports - Good or bad for athletes?

Sports, if linked with romance in one way or another, is widely open to
public conversation. It is becoming increasingly hard to tell if an
athlete becomes famous for his or her skills or because of his or her
personal life.

Romances among teammates are nothing new, but a coach and athlete couple
is rare. China's top tennis player Li Na, and her tennis-playing husband
cum coach have created a precedent in China.

Jiang's official appointment by the China Tennis Association (CTA),
China's tennis sport administrator, was in an effort to bolster Li's
"weak mentality" to boost the nation's hope of singles gold in 2008.

But public opinion on the appointment is divided. .

A tennis expert said family links between tennis coaches and athletes
benefits the athletes as it is easy for them to communicate with their
coaches both during training and in normal life. Russian tennis star
Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena are coached by
their fathers.

Others argue that a husband and wife partnership may form a tight circle
that excludes the other team members, making it difficult for them to
function as a solid whole.

Whether the controversial appointment will pay off or not is not yet
known. But romantic associations have already had different ramifications
in Chinese sports.

There have been many couples on the national badminton team, but the team
has never lost their dominant position on the world stage. The team
produced retired champions Sun Jun and Ge Fei, already married and
serving champions Lin Dan and Xie Xingfan with Lin and Xie as the reining
world No.1 and No.2.

"If romance can motivate our top athletes but does not negatively impact
their normal lives and training, or on their taking home gold, as their
coach, I can't find any reason to oppose these couples," said Li Yongbo,
chief team coach.

Compared with the romance-friendly badminton team, the table tennis team,
another gold medal team, is not that tolerant. Two women members were
sent back to their provincial team for having relationships with top men
players in 2004 so the men could concentrate on preparing for the 2004
Olympics.

Liu Guoliang, chief coach of the men's team and former World and Olympic
champion and his then-girlfriend Wang Jin, also a player, were separated
when Wang was taken off the national team in 1995. The couple married ten
years later in 2005.

Both the tennis and badminton team have similar aims, to help their
athletes play their best in 2008, even though they both have different
methods of dealing with athletes' romance.

Unlike individual sports, playing in pairs provides an atmosphere where
it is easy for romance to bloom. In pair figure skating, the skater's
dance is suggestive of a romance between the two.

champions and Turin bronze medalists and rising stars Tong Jian and Pang
Qing, 2006 World champions have announced their relationships off the ice.

Youngsters Zhang Hao, 21 and Zhang Dan, 20, Turin silver medalists gave
an excuse of still being small when asked if they are romantically linked.

Do they truly have emotions towards each other? At least they have to
foster attachments and compacts in order to be a skating pair.

Athletes are humans, and they need romance just like the rest of us. But
they are not quite ordinary people, so maybe their romances need to be
unusual as well, romances that motivate them to defend the nation's honor.

New shooting ends Gaza cease-fire

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Palestinian gunmen waged a street battle outside
the residence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas around dawn Monday,
dashing hopes that an overnight truce would bring quiet to the Gaza Strip.

The rival factions Hamas and Fatah are fighting for control over the
Palestinian government, and the volatile coastal territory was buffeted
by violence all day Sunday. Three people were killed in Sunday's
fighting, in which gunmen shot up the Palestinian foreign minister's
convoy and militants launched mortar shells at Abbas' office.

Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh has accused Abbas of inflaming the
political crisis by calling for early elections and said his Hamas group
would boycott the poll. Abbas, a moderate from Fatah, called for new
elections to resolve the political deadlock that has paralyzed the
Palestinian government since the hardline Hamas militants won January
parliamentary elections.

Hamas' electoral victory split the Palestinian government, with Abbas
seeking peace with Israel and Hamas refusing to even recognize the Jewish
state's existence. The political tensions have repeatedly turned violent
and the chaos has spiraled out of control since unknown gunmen killed the
three young sons of a Fatah-allied security chief last week.

Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar's motorcade came under fire Sunday as it
drove near the Foreign Ministry in Gaza City. Zahar was unharmed, but the
attack unleashed a ferocious gunbattle that raged for more than an hour,
the worst fighting since unity government talks broke down late last
month. Medical officials said a 19-year-old woman was killed in the
crossfire.

Zahar said top Fatah leaders were "fully responsible" for the attack on
him "and what will happen."

In a separate attack blamed on Hamas, dozens of gunmen raided a training
camp of Abbas' Presidential Guard near the president's residence, killing
a member of the elite force.

Hamas gunmen also opened fire at a demonstration of tens of thousands of
Fatah supporters in northern Gaza, wounding at least one person, and
unknown militants fired at least two mortars at Abbas' office in Gaza
City. Hours later, they launched another mortar shell.

Five pro-Fatah security men and a 45-year-old woman were wounded,
officials said. Abbas was in the West Bank at the time.

Elsewhere, the bullet-riddled body of a top security officer affiliated
with Fatah, Col. Adnan Rahmi, was discovered in northern Gaza several
hours after he disappeared, Palestinian medical officials and his family
said. No group took responsibility, but Rahmi's family blamed Hamas for
the killing.

The violence persisted throughout the night, with Hamas and Fatah gunmen
waging battles in the northern Gaza town of Jebaliya, near the home of a
Fatah strongman in Gaza, and outside the Gaza parliament building. Hamas
militants also clashed with Abbas' bodyguard unit outside his Gaza home.

A French reporter, 46-year-old Didier Francois of the newspaper
Liberation, was shot in the leg during the day's violence, according to
his newspaper.

Egyptian mediators and small Palestinian factions worked all day to
broker an agreement between the two sides, and a truce was announced at a
press conference in Gaza City after midnight.

But representatives of Fatah and Hamas did not appear at the press
conference, leaving the announcement to Rabbah Muhanna, a senior official
in the small Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. "Both sides
are serious about the agreement," Muhanna assured reporters.

Bush: Iraq progress too slow

WASHINGTON - President Bush told a Shi'ite political leader on Monday the
United States is not happy with progress in Iraq and sought the cleric's
help to curb extremists and terrorists trying to undermine the struggling
new democracy.

Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim said US troops need to stay in Iraq to help deal with
escalating violence. He also told Bush that Iraq welcomes help from other
nations, including those in the Middle East, so long as they do not
bypass Iraq's political process.

"Iraq should be in a position to solve Iraqi problems," al-Hakim told
Bush after they met in the Oval Office for more than an hour.

Some consider al-Hakim, who lived in exile in Iran for years, a more
powerful political figure than Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Al-Hakim leads the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq,
the largest Shi'ite bloc in Iraq's parliament. His party also is backed
by the Badr Brigade militia blamed for sectarian killings.

The meeting was evidence that Bush, under pressure to find a new
blueprint for his war strategy, was getting more personally involved in
the political infighting among Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds.

"I told him that we're not satisfied with the pace of progress in Iraq,
and that we want to continue to work with the sovereign government of
Iraq," Bush said. He said the young Iraqi government needs to be given
more capability as quickly as possible to secure the country from
extremists and murderers.

Bush is meeting on Thursday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair - a
day after the bipartisan Iraq Study Group issues its long-awaited
recommendations. Bush also plans to meet next month with Iraq's Sunni
Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi. Last week, he met in Jordan with
al-Maliki.

Before al-Hakim's visit to the United States, two al-Maliki aides and a
third person close to al-Hakim said the cleric was expected to try to
persuade Bush to enlist Iran's help in quelling violence in Iraq.

Bush to go overseas again for key talks

WASHINGTON - President Bush reaches out to allies this week for help in
quelling violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, in a burst of diplomacy from a
Baltic summit of NATO partners to Mideast talks with Iraq's prime
minister.

Just back from an eight-day trip to Asia, Bush was leaving on Monday on
another overseas trip as pressure builds at home for a change in his
administration's Iraq strategy amid deepening tensions and violence in
that country.

The president stops first in Estonia en route to a NATO summit in
neighboring Latvia where a debate over peacekeeping operations in
Afghanistan is expected to dominate.

Estonia and Latvia have sent troops to both Iraq and Afghanistan and the
US considers the two former Soviet republics important allies.

From Latvia, the president heads to Amman, Jordan, for two days of talks
with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Jordan was deemed a less
dangerous setting for the meeting than Baghdad.

White House aides said the meeting, a late addition to Bush's itinerary,
was part of the president's process of sounding out various parties as he
ponders how to proceed in Iraq.

Iran and Syria are trying to assert influence in stabilizing Iraq without
American involvement, and tensions in the region increased further last
week with the assassination of a Cabinet member in the US-backed
democratic government of Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora - a killing
some have blamed on Syria. Also, sectarian attacks in Iraq have surged in
recent days.

Jordan's King Abdullah said Sunday that tensions in the Middle East go
beyond the war in Iraq and that much of the region soon could become
engulfed in violence unless the central issues are addressed quickly.

"We could possibly imagine going into 2007 and having three civil wars on
our hands," he said on ABC's "This Week," citing conflicts in Iraq,
Lebanon and the decades-long strife between the Palestinians and Israelis.
